I started thinking about this while talking to mikey, the Copenhagen-based duo formed by Maiken Rask and Henrik Petersen, about their music, their process, and what happens when you stop deciding too early what something is supposed to become.
They talk about the process itself. About seeing where something takes them. About following an intuition before even trying to explain it. Sometimes they find themselves overthinking, analysing things too much, but in the end they almost always return to that first feeling, the one that made something click.
I found myself recognising something of my own experience in their words.
Maybe because I’m also trying to understand what happens when you allow a process to exist before asking it for a result. When what you’re making isn’t just something you produce, but also something that teaches you something about yourself as you make it.

mikey and their way of making music
For mikey, intuition seems to have grown stronger through the process of making music. Over time, they have developed a shared language, a kind of ability to understand when something feels right to the other person. Making music has become less and less about doing everything the right way, and more about asking themselves what feels honest and what excites them in that particular moment.

Voler esplorare senza sentirsi persi.

Between knowing and not knowing: mikey’s creative process
But how much space do we really give ourselves to stay in that moment?
They also talk about that strange feeling of reaching a point where you feel like you should have things figured out by now. Professionally, personally, creatively. You should have a direction, know where you’re going, even when in reality you’re still trying to figure so much out.
I think this is exactly where the tension becomes interesting.
Wanting to explore without feeling lost. Wanting a direction without becoming too rigid.
Maybe a creative process needs both. Maybe the point isn’t to choose between knowing and not knowing, but to leave enough space between the two for something to happen.
For them, independence is also part of this. It means being able to change direction, stay with a process for as long as they feel they need to, and make decisions based on what feels right to them, rather than constantly adjusting to external expectations, deadlines, or ideas of what something is supposed to become.

🇬🇧————————————————————————————————————
Fear of compromising
And underneath all of this, there is also a fear: the fear of compromising, of moving too far away from what you really want, of losing a part of yourself while trying to meet other people’s expectations.
And maybe this fear doesn’t only belong to people who make art.
Sometimes it becomes difficult to tell the difference between what we do for ourselves and what we do because we feel like we’re supposed to.
I recognised myself in this a lot.
Lately, I’ve started to realise how safe I can feel when I’m working on my own, while something is still taking shape. There is a particular kind of freedom in not having to explain it yet, in being able to experiment, make something strange, change direction, or leave something unfinished.
But then comes the moment when you bring it outside.
And suddenly, that process has an audience.

L’ho capito immediatamente.

mikey: their record studio as a space for freedom
Mikey describe the studio as a rather introspective experience. A space where they can explore and express themselves without the music necessarily having to be successful. But when they play live, or simply when their work comes into contact with the outside world, they become much more self-aware.
I understood that immediately.

Protecting the creative process from the gaze of others
What happens to the feeling something came from when someone else starts looking at it?
Maybe this is one of the hardest parts: trying to hold on to the same feeling the songs came from, even when someone is watching you.
It made me think about how much of the creative process is actually about protecting a certain kind of attention. The ability to listen to yourself before listening to everything that comes from the outside.
And maybe having other sources of stability can help protect that space. If what you do doesn’t necessarily have to succeed right away, it can simply exist. It can remain a place to explore.
Freedom has its contradictions, too. Having little time to devote to music can become a limitation in itself.
Maybe there is no perfect creative condition. There are only different ways of trying to stay close to what feels true to us.

Copenhagen and the Freedom of Not Knowing Where You’re Going
Maybe this is also what I associate with Copenhagen.
During the months I spent there, some of the moments I remember most clearly aren’t the ones where I had planned something or expected something to happen. They were often the simplest ones: sitting somewhere with friends, talking, laughing, staying a little longer than necessary. Meeting people without knowing what those encounters would become.
There was no particular outcome those moments needed to lead to.
I was simply there.
And precisely because I didn’t need those moments to become something, I think I was able to really experience them.

curbstone: mikey’s new single
That is the feeling that stayed with me when I listened to curbstone, Mikey’s melancholic goodbye to summer.
The song comes from something very simple: sitting on the curb with your closest friends, talking about life, dreams, and all the sweet and bitter things in between. There’s the city, there’s the romanticised idea of the countryside, and somewhere between the two, that strange feeling of summer coming to an end.
Maybe that’s why the curbstone feels like more than just a place within the song to me.
It’s a pause.
A place where you can sit without necessarily knowing where you’re going next.
And maybe these are the moments when we are most present, because we aren’t asking them to become something else.
The same could be true of making things.
A song. An image. A project. Maybe even a life.
We want to know where we’re going, but sometimes the most honest thing we can do is stay with what is happening right now and see where it takes us.
Maybe not knowing yet doesn’t mean being lost.
